According to a new report from Trend Micro and the Ponemon Institute, 86% of global organizations believe they will experience serious cyber attacks in the next year and 80% have indicated that they are likely to experience a data breach. The greatest risk was found in North America.
Based on the results of the global survey, the main areas of concern for businesses center around three areas. Many organizations said they were not sufficiently prepared to handle the new attacks on employees, officers and board members. Others pointed to the lack of sufficient processes to combat attacks, ranging from patching to sharing threats. Finally, companies have a strong need to assess their existing security tools and ensure that they are using the latest advanced detection technologies on their networks.
Taking into account the current threat landscape and based on the findings of the IRC, global companies can still significantly reduce their risks by implementing best security practices. It is important to strengthen security around critical data by focusing on managing risks and threats that could target the data. Organizations should seek to minimize infrastructure complexity and improve alignment across the entire security stack and revisit existing security solutions with the latest technology. We also have to focus on people. Senior management should view security as a competitive advantage and a priority, and organizations should invest in new and existing talent to help them keep up with the rapidly changing threat landscape.
Trend Micro and the Ponemon Institute have teamed up to study the level of cyber risk in organizations and create a Cyber Risk Index (CRI), a comprehensive measure of the gap between the organization’s current security posture and its likelihood of being attacked. A total of 3,677 respondents were surveyed in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
