So when her friends lure her to a surprise birthday party hosted by her boyfriend, Cam, she’s taking stock of her life so far. As she confesses to Gary in the elevator to the party—she thinks they’re just going out for a drink, but then he alerts her to the horde of pals waiting for her at the restaurant—she hesitates for a moment. little to revel in the milestone birthday given his battles with cancer in his twenties.
Gary understands that. But he reminds her that when they attended fellow survivor Elena’s get-away party the year before, “You told her not to let the fear of cancer keep her from living.” He adds: “The rest of your life awaits you up there, Bloom. I think you should show up for the rest of your life.
So she does, and that’s nice. But Cam’s devotion to Maggie is a bit too much for Gary to handle, so after a while he tells Rome he’s leaving and heading for the elevator. At the last moment, Maggie shouts, “Wait! and get in the car. Perplexed, Gary wonders what she is doing. “I’m showing up for the rest of my life,” she replies, grabbing his face with both hands and pulling him in for a kiss. They part as the doors reopen on the top floor (apparently Gary never pressed a button), and Cam stands there, seemingly unaware of what just happened.
